BORDEAUX OFFERING… A STUNNING TRIO OF SECOND LABEL PRODUCTIONS!
As most Bordeaux aficionados and wine enthusiasts know, second label productions from great vintages provide superb “bang-for-the-buck!” In this brave new world of record setting prices for blue-chips, perennial favorites and high scoring darlings, we offer you three Bordeaux bargains that are sure to provide pleasure for both your palate and pocketbook. Don’t miss out on this fantastic opportunity to procure some of the vintage’s most exciting second label productions! First come, first served! We reserve the right to limit quantities!

#335005 CHATEAU DULUC DE BRANAIRE DUCRU (ST. JULIEN) $49.95
The incredibly modest and understated Patrick Maroteaux has quietly turned Branaire Ducru into one of St. Julien’s A-list estates! The style of Branaire Ducru is one of regal balance and rarified elegance. A perfectionist in every way, Monsieur Maroteaux leaves no stone unturned in his pursuit of excellence. The estate’s second label is also traditionally fashioned emphasizing the bright red fruits so typical of St. Julien. For the record, Branaire Ducru itself scored 95 points from Robert Parker and could very well be the best wine ever produced at this marvelous estate! This superb second label, named after one of the estate’s early owners, is more than worthy and lives up to the fastidious standards of superstar Patrick Maroteaux!

#335006 LES HAUTS DE PONTET CANET (PAUILLAC) $59.95
Under the inspired leadership and guidance of Alfred Tesseron, Chateau Pontet Canet, a fifth growth estate, is now challenging such big name first growths as Mouton, Lafite and Latour. Tesseron, a down-to-earth, congenial sort, is unwavering in his belief that his terroir at Pontet Canet can rival that of the First Growths!
We were able to sample this second label wine at a luncheon party held chez Tesseron 2 years ago and couldn’t wait to get our hands on it as even then we knew it was that special! For the record, Pontet Canet itself scored Parker 96+! That’s higher than Mouton and the same as Lafite and Latour! This second label production is, on our opinion, the proverbial no-brainer!

MONDOT (ST. EMILION) $64.95 [#335007]
Thanks to her tireless efforts and painstaking pursuit of perfection, proprietress Christine Valette was recently able to procure Chateau Troplong Mondot’s elevation to Premier Grand Cru Classe status. This gracious woman resides at one of the prettiest estates in all of St. Emilion and her wine now sits at the same quality level as Cheval Blanc, Ausone and Angelus! In fact, if Petrus is the king of the Right Bank, than Troplong Mondot is its queen! This very rare (only 500 cases produced) and limited (only 100 cases for the west coast) second label production captures all of Christine’s regal feminity and Gallic charm. For the record, Troplong Mondot, itself, scored Parker 99 points! Move quickly on this one!

TWIN BORDEAUX STEALS!
Try these hot Bordeaux bargains on for size! Both are in-stock and ready to roll!

Chateau Martinat Epicurea (Cotes de Bourg) $29.99 [#304741]

Parker notes, “An outstanding effort from the Cotes de Bourg, this b lend of 80% Merlot and 20% Malbec reveals an inky/ruby/ purple color in addition to a big, smoky nose of charcoal, b lack cherries, cassis and spice. This lush, opulent, hedonistic 2005 should be enjoyed over the next 7-8 years.” (90 points)

Chateau Thieuley “Heritage de Thieuley” (Bordeaux) $29.99 [#304742]

Parker notes, “I have been following this estate for two decades and it is one of the most consistent source for generic Bordeaux. The 2005 “Heritage de Thieuley” is a blend of 80% Merlot and 20% Cabernet Sauvignon and Cabernet Franc. This outstanding, dense, rich and concentrated, well-balanced effort should be enjoyed over the next 7-8 years.” (90 points)

BURGUNDY FOR THANKSGIVING!
The cooler months of November and December and the festive nature of the season provide ample opportunity to enjoy the regal majesty of the Pinot Noir grape.

COTE DE BEAUNE VILLAGES 2005 MAISON FAIVELEY $24.95 [#305792]

This delightful little wine from Faiveley captures the high quality at play with 2005 red burgundy! The wine drinks nicely now. It’s a traditionally fashioned affair that will drink well alone or with such autumnal fare as Turkey, pheasant and Cornish game hen.

ALOXE-CORTON 2005 “VALOZIERES” NICOLAS POTEL $59.95 [#305910]

This superb Burgundy (Burghound Best Buy (89-91) “Recommended”) is a centerpiece wine that’s just perfect for Thanksgiving dinner! It provides tons of lush Pinot Noir fruit along with that distinctive Burgundian flair that only France can deliver. Stylistically, Potel combines the best of modernity and tradition. This wine has “crowd pleaser” written all over it!

BURGUNDY: “STEAL-OF-THE-MONTH”
MEURSAULT ROUGE 2005 PIERRE MATROT $34.95 [#370120]
It’s rare that one encounters Meursault Rouge in the market as most of it is bottled and sold as Volnay! It’s even rarer that one encounters one that’s both this good and this affordable! We’ve long been supporters of Pierre Matrot and his traditionally rendered wines. This particular item delivers soft drinkability with silky, sensual tannins that frame the wine’s bright red fruits. A village wine in name only, it drinks like a premier cru production! Keep this wonderfully wrought red Burgundy in mind for your Thanksgiving smorgasbord.

Previously Featured...
2005 BORDEAUX - “AN EMBARASSMENT OF RICHES!”
Basically all of our drops have now arrived! As they say, better late than never! Please be advised that quantities may be limited on many of these. First come, first served!

CHâTEAU DUHART MILON ROTHSCHILD (PAUILLAC) $54.95 [#375455]

Another strong effort from this estate that has been on a role lately! Lafite’s commitment to this estate has boosted quality dramtically. (Parker 90-92)

CHâTEAU LAFON ROCHET (ST. ESTEPHE) $54.95 [#375460]

This perennial overachiever delvers again! Inky black fruit with all of the power, depth and complexity of a wine costing twice as much. (Parker 90-93)

CHâTEAU LABEGORCE (MARGAUX) $29.95 [#375277]

Very reasonably priced Cru Bourgeois that captures all of the richness, complexity and glory of 2005 Margaux. Classic Margaux nose and palate! [WS 90]

CHâTEAU TALBOT (ST. JULIEN) $49.99 [#375450]

Traditionalists will love this classically produced wine that’s reminiscent of the legendary 1986. Parker’s score is a bit conservative and reflects how traditionally crafted this gem is.
(Parker 88-90)

LATE SUMMER LOIRE
There’s still plenty of warm weather ahead for that’s perfect for clean, crisp and focused wines from France’s Loire Valley.

SANCERRE 2005 COMTE LAFOND $24.95 [#373101]

This classic delivers everything for which great Sancerre is prized: crisp invigorating Sauvignon fruit, a driving minerality that suggests notions of chalk and limestone and subtle nuances of sundry herbs and beurre blanc. This gem represents one of the last 2005s still left in the market place! While it lasts!

SANCERRE 2005 LA POUSSIE $22.95 [#327301]

When presented both of these wines, we had a hard time determining which one we liked best as both represent solid price/quality plays. This particular wine is a little different from the above-noted Comte Lafond in that it captures a bit more of the New Zealand flavor profile represented by sundry dollops of kiwi fruit, tropical melon, snow pea and goose berry. Again, one of the last 2005s we can still find in the pipeline!

MUSCADET 2007 DOMAINE TROIS TOITS $12.99 [#309994]

The “domaine of the three roofs” represents one of the newest additions to the cutting edge Neal Rosenthal portfolio. This estate essentially takes the place of Domaine Bourne which, as was noted here, stopped producing wine with the 2005 vintage upon the retirement of the owner. “Trois Toits” doesn’t miss a beat in providing a classic rendition of Muscadet that carries forceful vectors of sundry melon, lemon-lime fruit accented with delightful hints of sea salt, oyster shell and ocean spray. It’s perfect for mussels, crustaceans, seafood or shellfish entrees of choice.

2005 BORDEAUX IS HERE!
The parade continues with more stellar selections from this vintage of vintages!

PAVILLON ROUGE 2005 (MARGAUX) $89.99 [#375490]

2005 brings us what is surely one of the best Pavillon Rouge ever! Parker notes, “Margaux’s second wine gets better with each vintage. The 2005 us an equal part blend of Merlot and Cabernet Sauvignon with a hefty alcohol content. Fleshy, opulent and nearly decadent, with terrific fruit, a creamy texture and supple tannin, it can be enjoyed over the next 12-15 years.” (Parker 91 points)

CHATEAU RAUZAN SEGLA 2005 (MARGAUX) $150.00 [#375491]
Parker notes, “one of the most beautiful Rauzan Seglas made in decades, this blend of 55% Cabernet Sauvignon and the rest primarily Merlot and tiny dollops of Cabernet Franc and Petit Verdot exhibits a gorgeous perfume of spring flowers, subtle mint, black cherries, black currants, licorice and a hint of new oak. It offers medium to full body, sweet tannins and a layered mouthfeel that builds incrementally to a sensational finish. Although this beauty is performing well, it remains a decade away from its plateau of maturity.” (Parker 94+ points)

CHATEAU SMITH HAUT-LAFITTE (PESSAC-LEOGNAN) $99.99 [#374363]
Here’s another sure-fired winner from the 2005 campaign! Parker notes, “One can’t say enough about the accomplishments the Cathiards have achieved at this property since 1990. They have turned Smith Haut-Lafitte into a showcase Pessac-Leognan. The inky/blue/purple-tinged 2005’s extraordinary nose reeks of charcoal, incense, scorched earth, abundant blackberry, blueberry and cherry fruit, toast and spice. Good acidity, huge but sweet tannin and fabulous precision as well as definition characterize this full-bodied, super-concentrated effort. It should prove to be among the longest lived wines yet made by the Cathiards.” (Parker 95 points)

CHATEAU HAUT BAILLY 2005 (PESSAC-LEOGNAN) $84.95 [#374493]
2005 brings us what is certainly the best Haut Bailly ever! This wine is a real knock-out combining a classic traditional sensibility with an upgraded fruit richness that’s more closely associated with the modern school. Having said all that, let us reassure you, this is not a manipulated, dare we use the “P” word, kind of wine. The fruit concentration is the result of judicious yields and solid work in the cuverie. Parker notes, “The 2005 is an ethereal, delicate, finesse-styled offering with intensity as well as richness. It has all the concentration one could want but it comes across as gorgeously elegant and sublime because of its combination of delicacy, power and depth. Beautiful raspberry, black cherry, currant, graphite and scorched earth notes are subtle but provocative. In the mouth, there is good acidity, medium body, ripe tannins and terrific length. This is a beauty of haute couture from Pessac-Leognan.”
(Parker 95 points)

BORDEAUX: “STEAL-OF-THE-MONTH”
CHATEAU MOULIN HAUT LAROQUE 2005 (FRONSAC) $34.99 [#307413]
This superb bargain from France’s overachieving Fronsac district has been making friends and influencing people for a while here at our store! It combines the best of both worlds in delivering a genuine sense of place while possessing a modernist sensibility in terms of its drinkability quotient. Parker notes, “A stunning offering from one of Fronsac’s most consistent overachievers, this inky/blue/purple tinged 2005 offers up aromas of black raspberries, crushed rocks, spring flowers, earth and spice. Superior concentration, medium to full body, beautiful integration of acidity and tannin and a 30+ second finish result in an impressive Fronsac.”
(Parker 92 points)

BURGUNDY: “STEAL-OF-THE-MONTH”
BOURGOGNE 2005 DOMAINE DAVE CLARK $29.99 [#315844]
Kind of an unusual story here in that the proprietor is an Englishman living the dream, as they say, growing grapes and making wine in Burgundy! This initial foray is not a bad one and those who have already tasted this have been impressed. We were too but though the wholesaler’s initial offering price was a bit high notwithstanding the fact that the wine is basically de-classified from a lieux-dit in Chambolle Musigny. Times being what they are, soft economy and all, our supplier came back to us with a counter offer enabling us to sell the wine at a niveau we felt more appropriate. Soft and subtle on the palate, the wine is, nevertheless, a fruit laden delight that delivers all of the glory of 2005! While it lasts!

CHATEAU LA TOUR HAUT BRION 2005 PESSAC-LEOGNAN $74.95 [#375065]
Over these years, we’ve had many great experiences with this property in that the wines delivered classic Pessac-Leognan character at a price that always delivered a smile to your face. 2005 will be the last vintage for La Tour Haut Brion as starting in 2006, the vineyards will become part of Chapelle de la Mission (2nd label of La Mission Haut Brion). Own a piece of history with this very well done, Cabernet dominant wine that delivers! James Suckling notes, “Shows interesting aromas of chocolate, meat and berry with hints of fresh cepe. Turns floral and aromatic. Full-bodied with soft, velvety tannins and a medium finish. Very balanced and pretty. Elegant and seductive. This is the last year of LTHB. Best after 2014.2,250 cases made.”
(Wine Spectator 93)

CHATEAU GRAND PUY DUCASSE 2005 PAUILLAC $39.95 [#373671]
2005 brings us what is more than likely the best Grand Puy Ducasse ever! This long under-achieving 5th growth estate has produced a superb wine in 2005 that recently garnered a more-than-respectable 91 points from Robert M. Parker. He notes, “Another ‘best ever’ performance, the Grand Puy Ducasse is made in a charming style for a 2005 Pauillac. This deep, ruby-hued, very concentrated, precocious, showy effort displays copious quantities of sweet oak intermixed with black cherries, black currants, velvety tannins, medium body and loads of fruit. It can be drunk now or cellared for 15-20 years.” (Wine Advocate  91)

LES PAGODES DE COS 2005 ST. ESTEPHE $39.95 [#373630]
With prices skyrocketing for Bordeaux, in general, and blue chips, in particular, second labels make more sense than ever! Here’s a stellar example that recently garnered 90 points from Robert M. Parker. He notes, “The second wine for Cos d’Estournel, the 2005 Les Pagodes de Cos, is already delicious! Offering plenty of cedar, cappuccino and black cherry notes in a medium-bodied, seamless style with no hard edges, it will provide plenty of pleasure over the next decade.” Don’t miss out on this superb Bordeaux bargain that’s essentially a mini-Cos d’Estournel! (Wine Advocate 90)

LA CROIX DE BEAUCAILLOU 2005 ST. JULIEN $39.95 [#373701]
Croix Beaucaillou (2nd label for Ducru Beaucaillou) has become a virtual staple at our store. This started in 2000 with a superb production followed by the 2003 which was a huge hit at our store. The 2005 has now arrived and it’s another smash success. Parker notes, “Ducru’s second wine, the sensational 2005 Croix de Beaucaillou, is the finest example of this cuvee I have ever tasted. Sweet black raspberry and black cherry fruit aromas soar from the glass of this open-knit seductress. A dense, ruby-purple color, beautiful full-bodied, lush, expansive flavors, low acidity and sweet tannin suggest this lovely cuvee should be drunk over the next 12-13 years. It is an amazing sleeper of the vintage!” (Wine Advocate 91)

CHATEAU D’ISSAN 2005 MARGAUX $95.00 [#375470]
The 2005 vintage has brought to us the greatest wine ever from Chateau d’Issan. It’s classically styled Bordeaux that delivers refined a Margaux identity worthy of a cellaring play. Parker recently awarded this gem 95 points noting, “Along with the 2000, the 2005 is one of the greatest d’Issan I have ever tasted! Kudos to proprietor Emmanuel Cruse for creating this beauty. Its dense purple color is accompanied by aromas of camphor, forest floor, blackberries, cassis and a hint of spring flowers. Full-bodied with superb richness, purity, texture and abundant sweet tannin, it should hit its stride in 3-4 years and last for 25+. Bravo!”
(Wine Advocate 95)

CHÂTEAU MEYNEY 2005 ST. ESTEPHE $29.95 [#373567]
2005 brings us one of the best Château Meyney ever! It’s a loaded, fruit generous wine that delivers flavor complexity way beyond the price point. Rather sophisticated for a St. Estephe, this little number is round with well-integrated tannins; yet still carries that classic sense of place known in Bordeaux as St. Estephe!

CHÂTEAU MONBRISON 2005 MARGAUX $44.99 [#375447]
2005 brings us the best Château Monbrison ever! One of Margaux’s perennial underachievers has come through in 2005 with a superb wine that delivers classic Margaux elegance and finesse along with a richness and complexity worthy of this renowned and beloved commune. (Wine Spectator 91)

CHÂTEAU LA LAGUNE 2005 HAUT MEDOC $105.00 [#304508]
Speaking of Margaux, Château La Lagune delivers what is essentially a Margaux wine despite being labeled Haut Medoc. Parker blessed the wine with 95 points noting, “This is the finest wine made at this estate since 1982 and possibly the greatest La Lagune of all time! Its dense ruby purple color is followed by an exquisite bouquet of spice box, incense, sweet unsmoked cigar tobacco, black cherry liqueur, forest floor and subtle toasty oak. Reminiscent of a Cote de Nuits Grand Cru blended with a top-notch Bordeaux, this beauty possesses silky tannins, a broad savory, expansive mouthfeel and intrinsic precision as well as elegance.”

CHÂTEAU LA CROIX MOUTON 2005 BORDEAUX SUPERIOR $23.99 [#316916]
We’ve had a lot of our customers asking for this wine that was a huge hit at the store all throughout last year’s holiday season. Well, it’s back! We were able to find a small parcel of this Parker Sleeper (Parker 89 points) through one of our wholesalers and while it’s at a slightly higher price, it still makes sense within the context of the vintage and the market! While it lasts!

CHÂTEAU FOURCAS-DUPRE 2005 LISTRAC $15.95 [# 373435]
We’ve long been fans of this estate in that they deliver, year-in and year-out, a serviceable product that’s well-priced and well-crafted. They’ve hit the jackpot in 2005 with what may be their best effort ever! It’s a lovely production that blends Merlot and Cabernet Sauvignon and takes the best both grapes can offer in providing a wine with a lush, velvety texture as well as a power punch and depth of complexity that goes way beyond the price point! We went big on this upon tasting and so will you!

DON’T FORGET ABOUT THE WHITES!
While white wine has been completely discounted in many wine circles simply because of its color (Isn’t that discrimination?) we still recommend highly white wine, in general, and 2005 white Bordeaux in particular! It’s one of France’s greatest vintages ever for the Sauvignon Blanc based wines of Bordeaux!

CHÂTEAU DE FIEUZAL 2005 PESSAC-LEOGNAN $49.99 [#375421]
Parker notes, “The 2005 Fieuzal offers up aromas of hazel nuts, lemon zest, white peaches, currants and honeysuckle. Gorgeous acidity, a touch of creamy oak and a full-bodied mouthfeel result in a Burgundian-styled white Graves. Enjoy it over the next 20 years! (Parker 92 points!)

PAVILLON BLANC 2005 MARGAUX $89.99 [#375853]
From the renowned Château Margaux, Parker notes, “This stunningly rich 100% Sauvignon Blanc is drinking fabulously well at present, yet has the potential to evolve for 15-20 more years. Waxy lemon oil, honeysuckle, nectarine and subtle new oak characteristics are all present in this light gold-colored, long wine.”  (Parker 93 points!)

CHABLIS 2005 DOMAINE VOCORET $19.95 [#304714]
It was pure serendipity that a shipment of what as supposed to be the 2006 Vocoret Chablis, showed up to our wholesaler’s warehouse as the 2005! Seeing as we had already sold a ton of the 2005 and loved it, we immediately bought every case of the second lot! It just made sense! Everyone we have tasted on this has loved it! The price was still the same and there’s no getting around the fact that quality white Burgundy at the $20 price point is a disappearing commodity! Classic in every way, the wine delivers focused vectors of lemon-lime fruit accented with hints of minerals, stone and seashells! Fermented stainless and aged in used barrels, the wine’s pure Chardonnay richness is a joy to behold and while the label indicates a village wine, it’s a village wine in name only as this production flat out beats a lot of 1er Cru we’ve experienced! Seafood lovers and wine aficionados of all ilk will not want to miss this incredible bargain!

CHASSAGNE MONTRACHET ROUGE 2005 DOMAINE RAMONET $34.95 [#305305]
As most know, we have a keen predilection for Chassagne Rouge as it delivers, especially in great vintages, high quality juice that delivers way beyond its meager price point. Nobody does it better that Ramonet! This world class estate, known for its exquisite whites, delivers superb reds as well! This particular number captures bright, uplifting flavors of griotte, black cherry, red raspberry and boysenberry along with subtle hints of exotic spice, tea and white truffles. Delightfully rich and flavorful, the wine still retains an Old World charm of balance, elegance and finesse! Aaah Burgundy... it rarely gets any better at this price point!

GOING SOUTH!
Southern France…perfect for all of your outdoor grilling and BBQ needs!

CHÂTEAU L’HORTUS 2005 “GRAND CUVÈE” COTE DE LANGUEDOC $24.95 [#304987]
It’s been a while since we’ve carried L’Hortus in our store but this unique cuvee was too good to resist! It’s a black fruit beast that blends generous dollops of ripe plum, black cherry and blackberry fruits with hints of exotic spice and peppercorns. Perfect for grilled scenarios of any kind, the wine is a blend of Syrah, Grenache, Mourvedre and Cabernet. It’s framed judiciously with a bit of new wood that adds another dimension of creaminess to the wine flavor and texture!

CHÂTEAU SIMONE 2004 PALETTE $59.95 [#368504]
If you’ve ever visited any of the 2 or 3 star Michelins restaurants on the Cote d’Azur or read about the great wines of Provence, you will have encountered Château Simone produced in the tiny Provencal sub-region of Palette! It makes perfect sense that this classic Provencal gem is now being imported by cutting edge classicist Neal Rosenthal whose new book, Adventures of a Wine Merchant, is currently stirring up the wine world! We immediately took a small position on this wine as production is somewhat limited! Upon tasting, we were transported to a mystical world of olive trees, Mediterranean breezes and scintillating sunsets! Pure and elegant black fruit flavors of cherry, cassis liqueur and plum define this wonderfully wrought wine that verily defines Provence! Hints of anise, licorice and bouquet garni provide additional complexity to this regally feminine wine perfect for such outdoor meals as grilled lamb or beef kabobs! This old school, traditionally wrought wine will transport you instantly to the south of France and at the end of the day, there are worse things that could happen!

ALSACE
It’s been a while since we’ve done anything significant with Alsace but
there are a couple of items worth mentioning!

SYLVANER 2006 “VV” DOMAINE OSTERTAG $19.95 [#374457]
Ostertag’s Sylvaner is a store staple and the 2006 is superb! This perennial favorite delivers a classic style that emphasizes crisp, clean fruit that captures understated, water color flavors of sundry melon, apple and mixed tropical fruits! Perfect for seafood appetizers, snackies and munchies!

RIESLING 2006 DOMAINE ZIND-HUMBRECHT $19.95 [#380570]
Z-H provides us with a lovely Riesling perfect for richer seafood dishes as halibut, swordfish and lobster. Thick and viscous on the palate with lots of honey-butter richness, the acidity provided by the cooler 2006 vintage functions as a solid spine upon which the wine’s buttery rich fruit can hang. It’s perfect, as well, for grilled pork loin or that Alsatian classic torte d’oigno.

BANDOL 2005 DOMAINE GROS NORE $31.99 [#305721]
Gros Nore was brought on line by Kermit Lynch to fill the need for a popularly-priced Bandol that could fill the void for Domaine Tempier which tends to sell out rather quickly to collectors and restaurants. Even bolder than the above-noted Cahors, this wine (100% Mourvedre) combines dark cherry and black plum richness with hints of black olive, tapenade, herbs de provence, poivre and truffle oil. Perfect for grilled lamb!

BUGEY DE CERDON NV PATRICK BOTTEX $19.95 [#325189]
This warm weather sparkler has long been a customer fave and it’s back! It may pour pink but it’s actually quite dry in delivering a smorgasbord of such summer red fruits as raspberry, boysenberry cassis and ripe strawberry. Perfect for patio parties of any kind as well as grilled salmon and crab cakes.

CHÂTEAU VIEUX CLOS 2005 ST. EMILION $24.99 [#360289]
This superb St. Emilion is the real deal! Classically configured; yet juicy and approachable, you’ll love it! Parker notes, “Readers looking for a forward, velvety-textured, richly fruity St. Emilion with abundant quantities of black cherry and cherry fruit should check out this earthy, herbal, fruit-filled offering from a vineyard planted on sandy and gravelly soils. Soft tannins suggest this hedonistic 2005 is best drunk over the next 7-8 years.” (Wine Advocate  90)
